It’s a similar story with the stiff carbon handlebar – it’s great for aggressive riding but can feel under-evolved on coarser surfaces. But it’s not the most comfortable bike, with some of the frame’s compliance negated by a 31.6mm seatpost and rigid-hulled carbon saddle. The oversizing through the drivetrain points all your power to the back wheel, while slender dimensions elsewhere aim to provide a smooth ride – and to a certain extent they do. On the road the Fuji offers a compelling mix of stiffness with ‘just’ enough comfort. Being tubular rather than more convenient clinchers (for non-pros with no support vehicle) could be seen as a hassle, but when tubs are this good they’re worth considering. But the Vittoria tubulars surrounding them are soft, supple and wonderfully grippy whatever the conditions. For the competitive enthusiast who wants the best possible handling in a hardtail without the added cost of carbon, meet the Fuji Tahoe. This is compounded further in the wet with the rim taking a while to clear moisture before the pads grip sufficiently. In the dry they require a little more force at the lever to come in, which reduces feel. The frame geometry is tuned for a road racer, and through a new hydroforming process, the A6-SL aluminium frame is even lighter. The rim is stiff enough and the lack of mass impressive on climbs, but the braking isn’t quite up with the best. While the Roubaix has been updated over the years to reflect new materials and design technology, the essence of Fujis best-selling and longest-running race bike remains the same. They’re light, with a claimed weight (sans tubs) of 1330g. Oval’s 932 Tubular wheels combine 32mm carbon rims with aero Sandvik spokes and quality hubs. It’s the lightest out there, has superb brakes and innovative technology such as the one-piece cassette and ‘yaw’ front mech that eliminates the need for trimming.Īs Fuji and Oval are owned by the same company, it’s no surprise to find the latter’s name on the bar, stem, seatpost, saddle and wheels. We think this seriously undervalues just how good the groupset is.

Despite an initial splash and impressive results it still hasn’t overhauled Shimano or Campagnolo in the pro peloton, supplying just three of the 18 WorldTour teams (Shimano has 10, Campag five). The aim is that vaunted mix of stiffness and comfort. But although deep chainstays continue the oversizing, that’s only part of the story – the top tube slims rapidly to meet pencil-thin ‘SSSS’ (that’s ‘Super-Skinny SeatStays’). But equally, if somebody said they could take 3lb off me for £80 - the price of upgrading to the Cube here - I’d be tempted.Īdd to that the fact that, when all things are equal and caliper brakes are able to provide all the stopping power you need, do you really want to be carrying the extra weight of mechanical discs? I’m not making a judgment, it’s just something to consider. The frame follows the ‘big is beautiful’ mantra with a 1 1/2in lower head tube diameter, a massive down tube and oversize bottom bracket junction housing a press-fit BB86. Now, I’m particularly sympathetic to the argument that most of us could happily lose 3lb round our midriff. It’s also 1.5kg or 3lb heavier than the Cube.

Nobody wants to be a weight fascist, but the Fuji is heavier than either of the cheaper bikes in this test, and they weren’t particularly light. However, the Fuji isn’t quite perfect, and on the flat it feels a fraction lifeless, possibly the result of the extra mass. We see 105 as the default quality gearset, and it lives up to its reputation here, offering precise, smooth gear changes, but even the Tiagra front mech performs very efficiently. They work an absolute treat, especially in soggy situations.įuji has managed to fit mainly Shimano 105 gears to the Sportif 1.1, which is very commendable given the price and the Avid brakes. Then, because of those mechanical discs, you can be sure of taking on the downhill side with confidence too.
